This publication has a wide circulation of more than 1.31 million. The magazine was first called Sports Cars Illustrated & it was renamed Car & Driver in 1961. In 2005 the publication celebrated its 50th anniversary. It is a sister publication to Road & Track Magazine. Over the years the publication has included a variety of well known contributors including Bruce Mc Call Dick Smothers Jean Shepherd Brock Yates & PJ O’ Rourke. The magazine gives out an award called the John Lingenfelter Memorial Trophy on an annual basis which is presented at the Car & Driver Supercar Challenge. Also on an annual basis Car & Driver Magazine names the ten best cars of the year. The magazine is known for having very stringent & rigorous testing processes for new cars. The editorial staff pulls no punches & when they think something is wrong with a car they say it. Examples of this are the reviews of the 1999 SVT Mustang Cobra & the 2001 Mazda Miata which in tests run by the magazine proved that the performance claims made by the manufacturers were wrong.
